Domestic extraction is an environmental indicator that measures, in physical weight, the amount of raw materials extracted from the natural environment for use in any economy. It excludes water and air.
Domestic extraction often contributes directly to the environmental degradation of local environments through impacts such as pollution, biodiversity loss and the loss of natural carbon sinks. Such impacts occur regardless of whether the extracted materials are used domestically or exported for use abroad [Eurostat, 2024].
